Chapter 27 : This chapter starts off with Pip getting a letter from Biddy telling him that Joe’s coming to visit him in London. Biddy also tells Pip that his sister is the same and that they talk about him every night and wonder what he’s doing.Biddy also adds Joe has a message for him. Biddy hopes that Pip wont be ashamed of Joe because he’s a poor blacksmith but he is. Pip is happy to see Joe . Pip is embarrassed of Joe and glad that Joe wont be visiting at the Pockets’ house where Bentley Drummle might see him. We learn that Pip’s redecorated his apartment and hired a young boy to be his servant but after getting the boy a uniform he realizes that he doesn’t have anything for the boy to do. Pip calls the boy the Avenged Phantom (the Avenger for short), because he always hangs around like a ghost and does not really do anything. Joe gets here the next day and is really happy to see Pip but he’s really uncomfortable in Pip’s apartment. Joe won’t shake Herbert’s hand because he’s too much of a gentleman. Instead he bows a little bit to Herbert in deference to him. Joe notices the Avenger but doesn’t know what to do with him. He also doesn’t know what to do with his hat so he hangs it on the side of a fireplace where it keeps falling down. Pip is not doing anything to help whilst Joe is struggling and is just watching, and he’s happy when Herbert has to leave. Joe tells Pip what is going on back at home : Mr. Wopsle has left the church to become an actor in London and that He and Mr. Wopsle went to go check out a blacking factory the day before, and Joe didn’t think to much of it. Pip is totally just listing not talking through this and is wondering why Joe keeps on calling him sir. Joe also tells Pip that Mr. Pumblechook is saying that him and Pip were always best friends and he is the reason for Pips money. Then Joe tells Pip the reason why he cam , the message . Miss Havisham asked Joe to tell Pip that Estella is back and wants to see him. After telling Pip the message Joe is ready to go. During the journey home two convicts sit in front of Pip. Pip realises he knows one of the convicts is the same man who gave him the two-pound note all those years ago at the Three Jolly Bargemen. Pip is relieved that Herbert found a different name for him because if he said Pip the convict could remember him when Herbert was saying goodbye. The convict tells his friend about him give Pip the money, and Pip realizes that he’s talking about the same story. He’s scared that the convict is going to recognize him, even though it’s probably not going to happen .
