In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses the idea of fate . He does this through Romeo and he uses certain events to show fate . Fate is a pre-determined future . It’s the idea that everything’s already set in motion .

Romeo also says :

let he that hath steered my course direct my sail “.

Which means that he’s referring to himself as a ship and God the pilot . This quote also means that from now on he’s just going to go with it and let what’s going to happen happen . This metaphor can create tension , this is because the audience already knows what happens so when Romeo talks about following Gods path and just going along with what’s happening which the audience knows means death .Some ideas of fate ( the earlier ones ) Is Romeo talking to the servant . This only happens because Romeo’s walking on the street . Because the servant cant read and he’s given a list of names to invite to a party he finds a wealthy look man ( Romeo ) to read out the name’s then invites him to the party , Romeo sees Rosaline’s name on the list and goes . This all wouldn’t of happened if he wasn’t there at that time and place . This could be called a quadence but because of what it leads up to and how it’s all explained in the prologue it’s unlikely .

In Romeo and Juliet there’s a lot of foreshadowing like in the prologue and in some words spoken by people like Romeo . Some foreshadowing in the play is what Romeo says before he goes to the Capulet party .

I fear, too early: for my mind misgives                                                                                                         Some consequence yet hanging in the stars                                                                                                 Shall bitterly begin his fearful date                                                                                                                   With this night’s revels and expire the term                                                                                                         Of a despised life closed in my breast                                                                                                                   By some vile forfeit of untimely death.                                                                                                               But he, that hath the steerage of my course,                                                                                                Direct my sail! On, lusty gentlemen!“s

This is what Romeo says before the capulet party , this using foreshadowing and a metaphor . The metaphor is the Sail bit because this is Romeo referring to himself as a ship and that God is steering his course . And the foreshadowing bit is the ” untimely death ” bit because this is exactly what happens which means its foreshadowing because he  just predicted the future perfectly .

Shakespeare also uses a lot of language devices like metaphors and precipitation . And he uses a certain type of language . Shakespeare uses a lot of metaphors .

Romeo “My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.”

That was a metaphor because Romeo is saying that his lips are two blushing pilgrims , Romeo is comparing his lips to  pilgrims . Shakespeare is using a metaphor through Romeo . This is the type of thing Shakespeare does throughout the play .

In this play everything is leading to Romeo and Juliet’s death there are big bits leading up to it like Friar John not being able to give Romeo the letter . There’s also little bits like Lady Montague’s death which meant nothing . Even Mercutio’s death could have been seen as a big bit in Romeo and Juliet . This is because if Tybalt had not killed Mercutio , Romeo wouldn’t have got angry enough to kill Tybalt which if he didn’t he wouldn’t have been banished which meant he would of known about the plan with Juliet’s fake dead which killed them both .

Another big part in Romeo and Juliets death is Friar Lawrence tripping over graves when he goes to take Juliet out of the tomb . This can be called fate because after all of the tripping he walked in the tomb seconds after they die . If Friar Lawrence did not trip over the graves he would of been able save them .

“Saint Francis be my speed! How oft tonight have my old feet stumbled at grave!”
This is what the Friar says about tripping over the graves .
Their are a lot of metaphors and foreshawoding in Romeo and Juliet and a lot of events that happen that show a sign of fate . Shakespeare has made the idea of fate a big possibility in his play and with everything that happens it looks like their is fate .
