The Berlin Airlift

After World War II, the Allies (Britain, France, Australia,Canada, New Zealand, India, the Soviet Union, China and the United States of America.) divided the defeated Germany into a Soviet-occupied zone and a American-occupied zone, a British-occupied zone and a French-occupied zone. Berlin, the German capital city, was located deep in the Soviet zone, but it was also divided into four sections. In June 1948, the Russians–who wanted Berlin all for themselves–closed all highways, rail roads and canals from western-occupied Germany into western-occupied Berlin they closed off Berlin . This, they believed, would make it impossible for the people who lived there to get food or any other supplies and would eventually drive Britain, France and the U.S. out of the city for good. Instead of retreating from West Berlin, however, the U.S. and its allies decided to supply their sectors of the city from the air. This effort, known as the “Berlin Airlift,” lasted for more than a year and carried more than 2.3 million tons of cargo into West Berlin.

The Berlin airlift was the U.S and its allies supplying their parts of Berlin by air . They did this because Russia had closed off all ways to get in and out of Berlin because they wanted Berlin for themselves , This was all an attempt to drive the allies out of Berlin . The Airlift lasted for more than a year and more than 2.3 million tons of cargo were carried into West Berlin .

Hotel Rwanda Essay

In this essay I will answer the question : How does the director of the film Hotel Rwanda uses cinematographic techniques to increase the impact of the selected “Riverside” scene .

The Director uses a combination of different shots, sounds, techniques and settings to make up the scene.

All through the movie we see Paul’s face for a reaction before anything else . Like when Paul saw all the dead bodies on the road before we saw that their was a close up on Paul’s face . The director does this to show us Paul’s reaction ,it shows us the seriousness of what he’s seeing and by looking at his face we see some emotions like Guilt,Sadness,Despair and anger . Paul feels guilty because he ignored the situation in the early stages and acted like it was nothing. Paul will feel sad because he’s seeing all these dead people . Paul will feel despair because he cant help and feels as if all is lost . Paul is also a little bit angry because all his people are being killed by each other over nonsense and all of this is all over his face .

Doing the close up on Paul is one of the many shots the director has made to make up the movie . He uses a combination of shots and angles to give off a certain feel . When Paul fell out of car the director purposely let him fall out of the shot this is to make it more realistic and to hide what’s on the floor . When they were driving their was heavy fog covering the car and they couldn’t see anything and director use a number of shots to explain this to you . Shots from the back of the car , shots of the car and the fog surrounding it and over the shoulder shots from Paul so you could see that they could not  see because Paul sees everything before us the director uses certain shots to hide the dead bodies so we cant see them. So when Paul fell out of the shot and the story is about him it makes it look a lot more realistic . The director use different angles to change the feel of it . When Paul fell out of the car their was a close up of his face horrified . and the a shot of a dead girl and then the fog clears off showing us what they were driving on . The director make it look like they were face to face by how she shot them both close ups and both sideways .

When Paul is looking at the dead girl you head a sound of a machete which is not in the scene (non dietetic) . The director uses alot of non dietetic sounds to give a feel to some scenes , he uses sounds like mournful African music  for a feel of sadness and fear and he uses the machete sound for shock . These different sounds gives the scenes a certain scary , sad feel .

Satirical Tweets

The homework is to write one satirical sentence , using a complex sentence form, fit for publishing on Twitter.

THE HOMEWORK :

” When tempted to fight fire with fire remember the fire department usually uses water. “

This is satirical because what is says on the surface is not what it means . It means that remember that the best things to fire back at someone is not always what they used .

Satire

A form of satire is the Rap Battle Parody they use a lot of satire when they speak and the whole concept . Things that make up satire .

  • Understatement : The presentation of something as being smaller, worse, or less important than it actually is.
  • Hyperbole : Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
  • Irony : The expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
  • Sarcasm : The use of irony to mock or convey contempt.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 The Rap Battle Parody is an example of satire because of how exaggerated it is (Hyperbole) and how the worser rapper always wins so that means that the good rappers rhyme’s are understated because of how good they are but he doesn’t win for him .

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses the idea of fate . Fate is a pre-determined future , it’s the idea that everything’s already set in motion and everybody is a course heading for something that they can’t escape . Shakespeare uses the idea of fate throughout  the play . He puts it in metaphors and certain events that happen could be seen as fate and they needed to happen .

Shakespeare uses the idea of fate through Romeo’s words he uses metaphors at the same time . One quote’s where Romeo uses a metaphor and the idea of fate is where romeo says : “Let he that hath steered my course direct my sail “. This quote is Romeo referring to God as “he” And himself as a boat . Romeo is saying that God “he” is directing his “sail” which means that he’s just going with what happens and following a path which is set in front of him . This quote uses a metaphor and Fate at the same time .

There are clear moments of fate in this play the earliest sign of fate is the servant walking up to Romeo on the street and asking to read out the names for the Capulet party . If Romeo hand not been on that street at that day the servant wouldn’t of asked him to read out the names , he wouldn’t of seen Rosalie’s name and he wouldn’t of gone to go to the party . If he didn’t go to the party he wouldn’t of met Juliet and wouldn’t of fallen in love with her .Another sign of fate is Friar John not being able to give Romeo the letter because of the quarantine and Friar Lawrence tripping over the graves .This can be called fate because after all of the tripping he walked in the tomb seconds after they die . If Friar Lawrence did not trip over the graves he would of been able save them .

Fate can also be seen as a big coincidence . It can be said that if the servant could’ve been able to read the whole play wouldn’t of happened and that Romeo being on that street on that day can be a coincidence . For people who aren’t religious  and don’t believe in God they will see this play as a big coincidence and that their is no such thing as fate but with all that goes on in the play all the signs of fate its hard to believe that theirs no such thing as fate.

In Baz Luhrmann’ redo of Romeo and Juliet he also explores the the idea of fate but this fate is clearer because he an use symbols that we can visually see . He shows us where fate is that Shakespeare put it . Baz Luhrmann’s redo of Romeo and Juliet helps you understand the play better .

“Saint Francis be my speed! How oft tonight have my old feet stumbled at grave!”
That is what the Friar says about tripping over the graves .

There’s also a lot of foreshadowing in play . Foreshadowing is hinting at the future which is what this quote below does . Technically the prologue does not foreshadow because it doesn’t hint or predict the future it says what’s going to happen .

I fear, too early: for my mind misgives                                                                                                                         Some consequence yet hanging in the stars                                                                                                                 Shall bitterly begin his fearful date
With this night’s revels and expire the term                                                                                                                       Of a despised life closed in my breast
By some vile forfeit of untimely death.”

That is what Romeo says just before entering the Capulet party this is foreshadowing because Romeo is hinting at the future . Romeo is fearful that something will happen tonight that will lead to his “untimely death” which is exactly what happened  . That quote is the earliest bit of foreshadowing . The Prologue does not  use foreshadowing because it doesn’t hit at the future it tells you whats going to happen .

There’s a lot of bits in the play that can be seen as fate and that it needed to happen for Romeo and Juliet’s end like Romeo being banished . If Romeo was never banished then the letter would’ve got to him about the plan or the Fair would’ve gone to see him . This means that Mercurio dying could’ve been seen as fate sense if he hadn’t died fighting Tybalt Romeo wouldn’t of tried to kill him and therefore get banished .

There’s also events and even people in the play that didn’t need to be their like Mrs.Montague she does nothing significant and just dies at the end . But certain minor characters need to be their like Juliet’s nurse and Balthasar . The nurse can be seen as a one of the most needed characters in the play . This is because if she wasn’t there no-one would’ve encouraged Juliet to see Romeo . The nurse also helps Juliet set up the wedding at conform Romeo’s love for her to Juliet  .  Balthasar could also be seen as a needed character since he delivers the news to Romeo and Juliet’s death ( even though it was apart of the plan ) and Balthasar is Romeo’s best friend . It could be seen that if Balthasar wasn’t at Juliet’s fake funeral then Romeo wouldn’t of wanted to kill himself .

Shakespeare uses a large combination of metaphors , foreshadowing and more in Romeo and Juliet to make up this play .

END.

Romeo and Julet fate

In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses the idea of fate . He does this through Romeo and he uses certain events to show fate . Fate is a pre-determined future . It’s the idea that everything’s already set in motion .

Romeo also says :

let he that hath steered my course direct my sail “.

Which means that he’s referring to himself as a ship and God the pilot . This quote also means that from now on he’s just going to go with it and let what’s going to happen happen . This metaphor can create tension , this is because the audience already knows what happens so when Romeo talks about following Gods path and just going along with what’s happening which the audience knows means death .Some ideas of fate ( the earlier ones ) Is Romeo talking to the servant . This only happens because Romeo’s walking on the street . Because the servant cant read and he’s given a list of names to invite to a party he finds a wealthy look man ( Romeo ) to read out the name’s then invites him to the party , Romeo sees Rosaline’s name on the list and goes . This all wouldn’t of happened if he wasn’t there at that time and place . This could be called a quadence but because of what it leads up to and how it’s all explained in the prologue it’s unlikely .

In Romeo and Juliet there’s a lot of foreshadowing like in the prologue and in some words spoken by people like Romeo . Some foreshadowing in the play is what Romeo says before he goes to the Capulet party .

I fear, too early: for my mind misgives                                                                                                         Some consequence yet hanging in the stars                                                                                                 Shall bitterly begin his fearful date                                                                                                                   With this night’s revels and expire the term                                                                                                         Of a despised life closed in my breast                                                                                                                   By some vile forfeit of untimely death.                                                                                                               But he, that hath the steerage of my course,                                                                                                Direct my sail! On, lusty gentlemen!“s

This is what Romeo says before the capulet party , this using foreshadowing and a metaphor . The metaphor is the Sail bit because this is Romeo referring to himself as a ship and that God is steering his course . And the foreshadowing bit is the ” untimely death ” bit because this is exactly what happens which means its foreshadowing because he  just predicted the future perfectly .

Shakespeare also uses a lot of language devices like metaphors and precipitation . And he uses a certain type of language . Shakespeare uses a lot of metaphors .

Romeo “My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.”

That was a metaphor because Romeo is saying that his lips are two blushing pilgrims , Romeo is comparing his lips to  pilgrims . Shakespeare is using a metaphor through Romeo . This is the type of thing Shakespeare does throughout the play .

In this play everything is leading to Romeo and Juliet’s death there are big bits leading up to it like Friar John not being able to give Romeo the letter . There’s also little bits like Lady Montague’s death which meant nothing . Even Mercutio’s death could have been seen as a big bit in Romeo and Juliet . This is because if Tybalt had not killed Mercutio , Romeo wouldn’t have got angry enough to kill Tybalt which if he didn’t he wouldn’t have been banished which meant he would of known about the plan with Juliet’s fake dead which killed them both .

Another big part in Romeo and Juliets death is Friar Lawrence tripping over graves when he goes to take Juliet out of the tomb . This can be called fate because after all of the tripping he walked in the tomb seconds after they die . If Friar Lawrence did not trip over the graves he would of been able save them .

“Saint Francis be my speed! How oft tonight have my old feet stumbled at grave!”
This is what the Friar says about tripping over the graves .
Their are a lot of metaphors and foreshawoding in Romeo and Juliet and a lot of events that happen that show a sign of fate . Shakespeare has made the idea of fate a big possibility in his play and with everything that happens it looks like their is fate .
